Gouache technique explored in new West Hartford Art League class

A work by Emily Rose Hirtle, instructor in gouache technique.

WEST HARTFORD — West Hartford Art League presents a new online class in gouache technique with instructor Emily Rose Hirtle. Hirtle attended The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and received her BFA and Certificate in Painting in 2017.

She received her MFA in Drawing from The New York Academy of Art.

In this class, you will work from life and reference material you have taken.

Assignments will include painting your self portrait and a portrait of a family member or friend. The first assignment will be a master copy of a gouache portrait from a contemporary painter that works primarily in aqueous media. You will learn about artistic anatomical structure, additional formal elements of image making, application of the paint, the materiality of the medium and a variety of surfaces gouache can be applied to.

Emily has work in numerous collections including The Linda Lee Alter Collection in Philadelphia, PA, that of actress and model Brooke Shields and actor Aidan Turner.
