The club’s members, who represent a diverse cross section of the town’s businesses and community organizations, raise thousands of dollars for local charities and international health initiatives, provide study abroad grands, host exchange students, sponsor a middle school writing project, give dictionaries to the town’s 3rd graders, support music students and much more. West Hartford Rotary’s Annual Sunday Jazz Brunch, sponsored by the Rotary Club of West Hartford, is now in its 17th season. This highly popular event has been successful in raising funds for many local charitable organizations. Past artists have included Jimmy Cobb, Don Friedman, Delfeayo Marsalis, Renee Rosnes, Javon Jackson, Jimmy Heath and Chris Flory. Each year, this day brings the best jazz artists New York and Boston have to offer to more than 200 jazz enthusiasts. All expenses, including payments to the musicians, equipment rental, promotional costs and the cost of the brunch itself, are financed solely by ticket sales.
Half of the event’s profits will be donated to the Gifts of Music program (www.giftsofmusic.us) to provide musical instruments and lessons for gifted and talented West Hartford public school students who cannot afford to pay for them. Over the past 16 years Rotary Club of West Hartford has been able to donate more than $35,000 to this program. Remaining proceeds will help to support local organizations and projects that support education, seniors and youth in West Hartford.
