WEST HARTFORD — In its 43rd season, the West Hartford Summer Arts Festival presents “Legally Blonde.” Composed by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin, and written by Heather Hach, “Legally Blonde” made its debut on Broadway in 2007. Sara Demos Avery, West Hartford Summer Arts Festival artistic director, shares, “‘Legally Blonde’ is a tremendously fun show with a lovely message about knowing your worth. Between the amazing dance numbers and the funny dialogue, it’s a great show for summer!”
SAF was founded by current executive producer Haig Shahverdian in 1977 as a venue for West Hartford high school and college students to perform in high caliber productions of some of Broadway’s most famous musicals and plays.
The role of Vivienne Kensington will be played by Janey Lorenzo, a Conard High School graduate and who is a rising sophomore at Wagner College. Speaking to SAF as an educational summer theater program, Janey says, “SAF has truly been my family the past five summers because they provide such an amazing outlet for high school and college students to participate in high quality educational theatre.”
Since its inception, the program has found its focus centering on musicals and expanded to include participants outside of West Hartford. This year SAF has cast members from West Hartford, Avon, Simsbury, South Windsor, and many more. This growth allows SAF students to develop their networking across Connecticut towns and spread its passion for musical theater with other students outside of West Hartford.
Lauren Sussler, a West Hartford resident and a rising senior at Hall High School shares, “SAF has introduced me to some of my lifelong friends, and I could not be more grateful to be a part of such a wonderful and supportive family that I will cherish for life. The strong professionalism and quality of this production has ingrained habits and expectations that I know will serve me well in college and beyond. I am grateful to SAF for instilling within me the drive to achieve my dreams and the joy we all find in doing something that we love.”
In addition to Avery, the SAF creative team includes director and choreographer Kate Morran, music director Jonathon Reuning-Scherer, associate music director Michelle Horsley, vocal coach Sarah Asmar, staging director Michael Graham Morales, technical director and set designer Rorie Fitzsimons, and others.
