Bear in West Hartford tree climbs down without incident

A bear sits in a tree behind a home on North Quaker Lane. Police said they received multiple calls a day of bear sightings in West Hartford.

WEST HARTFORD — The bear that was spotted high in a tree behind a North Quaker Lane home last week came down on its own after two days without any issue.

Officials had said the bear was a suspected frequent visitor to the neighborhood and that they had been monitoring it for the entirety of its stay in the tree. They suspected the bear was feeling sick.

Capt. Eric Rocheleau said the police department is constantly receiving calls about bear sightings in West Hartford. Their job, he said, is to respond to the calls and monitor the situation, while decisions are made by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Rocheleau recommends residents try their best to keep their garbage cans inside if possible to keep bears away from their yards.
