WEST HARTFORD — The Foundation for West Hartford Public Schools, with generous support of community members and organizations, has funded over $1,700,000 in teacher grants to support educational programs since 1997. These grants have included dollars to diversify school library collections and provide programs focused on teaching racial diversity, justice, and cultural competency to students, according to an email from the foundation.

President of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, Carol Lorenzo shared “We recognize and value the power and importance of education as a tool to eradicate racism and injustice in society. To those students and educators who march for justice and speak out for change — your actions are making a difference and you have inspired us to do more!”

Recently, Foundation board members unanimously voted to:

Award a $20,000 grant to the WHPS Department of Diversity Advancement to fund curricula that best supports equity and anti-racism education in West Hartford Public Schools.

Create an annual commendation given to a graduating Conard student and a graduating Hall student who have exemplified work for racial justice, inclusion and anti-discrimination.

Commit to an expanding emphasis on the funding of programs that target racial justice and fighting discrimination, starting with the 2021 grant process.

Roszena Haskins, Director of Diversity Advancement for the West Hartford Public Schools responded, “I was so excited and overcome with tremendous hope for how much this generous grant funding will help us to reimagine education and create more equitable and just schools!”
