WEST HARTFORD — Amid school closures necessary to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Renbrook School has launched a dynamic Distance Learning program to support students from Preschool through Grade Eight according to an email from the school. Head of School, Matt Sigrist emphasizes the value of a dedicated and talented faculty during this transition: “a hallmark of the Renbrook community is our extraordinary faculty who will lead our online learning program. While digital assets will be central to this enterprise, our talented faculty recognize that, in this age of abundant information and factual ambiguity, the teacher as moral mentor, thoughtful curator, and guide on the side are skills necessary for the success of this learning model.”
Renbrook’s Distance Learning Program was officially launched on March 24. At the upper school level (grades six through eight) students are engaged in many of their regular routine activities such as morning meetings, mid-day breaks, and specials classes including music, art and P.E. From home, they are following a consistent and engaging daily schedule each day where they see not only their teachers, but their peers via online classes.
The lower school (grades preschool through five) students are participating in live class meetings and one-on-one and/or small group virtual lessons with teachers while completing assignments with flexible timing and an abundance of support from faculty and staff alike. Faculty and staff are reading stories online via different social media platforms to their beloved students and challenging themselves to stay connected in creative ways with the help of a variety of platforms.
Renbrook School’s mission is fueled by a tradition of innovation, self-discovery, and the pursuit of excellence, placing students at the center of their learning. While distance learning provides its own unique set of challenges, this tight-knit community is up for the task and Sigrist applauds all those who play a role in the successful learning to come, “With confidence in our excellent faculty, engaged parent partners, and ever-curious students, we look forward to a fruitful spring semester.”
The Admission Office is available to answer questions and provide virtual tours Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. Virtual Walk-In Wednesdays are scheduled for prospective families on April 15 from 9 - 11 a.m. and throughout the spring.
