AUGUST 22: George Orwell “1984” 3:30-4:30pm. On Jan. 24, George Orwell’s 1984 shot to the top of Amazon’s best-seller list. This occurred shortly after Kellyanne Conway and Sean Spicer made statements eerily reminiscent of Oceania, the dystopian world created by Orwell. These statements were just the beginning. The lies and misinformation continue today, purposed to deny scientific realities and to weaken the nation’s social safety net. In this lecture, Ketti Marks will focus on the why and how of Oceania. The relevancy of constant warfare. The creation of three classes of people. The distortion of facts and language. Manipulation. Violence. Following the lecture, we will discuss the extent to which some of the issues Orwell raises in the novel, such as authoritarianism, freedom of the press, the separation of powers, peaceful protest, and civil rights- are evident in the policies and rhetoric of the current administration. Ketti Marks is a retired NYC High School English teacher with an M. A. in Rhetoric and Public Address.
