West Hartford dentist buys back Halloween candy to send to troops

Dr. Paula Gomes displays some of treats collected for the troops overseas through Elmwood Dental Group’s highly successful Halloween Candy Buy Back program. The West Hartford practice collected 155 lbs. of candy for the military charity Operation Gratitude.

WEST HARTFORD — Patriotic children sold back more than 155 pounds of their Halloween treats to Elmwood Dental Group in West Hartford to benefit U.S. soldiers overseas. The practice hosted their first annual Halloween Candy Buy Back program from Nov.1 to 4 for Operation Gratitude, a non-profit organization that sends care packages to deployed troops and their families. The Buy Back program was actually extended by a day to allow those whose trick-or-treating was delayed due to weather to participate.

Children earned $2 per pound of candy, plus received free oral hygiene products. More than 30 kids swapped out their sweets and several of them declined the payout, choosing to simply donate their candy to the cause instead.

“We were so impressed with the number of children who wanted to show their gratitude for the brave men and women who protect our country,” said Dr. Paula Gomes with Elmwood Dental Group. “We want to thank everyone who made this initiative so incredibly successful and are honored to show our support for those who serve.”

The full-service dental practice located at 1132 New Britain Ave. hosted the Candy Buy Back event to encourage children to limit sugar consumption and promote good oral care habits by sharing their candy with the troops.
