West Hartford names new director of library services

Laura Irmscher is West Hartford's new director of library services.

WEST HARTFORD — The town has appointed Laura Irmscher as the next director of library services.

Irmscher, who will start her new position toward the end of January, has over 15 years of “extensive experience with many different facets of library operations,” the town said.

Irmscher, who has degrees from Simmons College and Alma College, comes to West Hartford from the Boston Public Library, where she started her career as a reference librarian. Irmscher most recently held the position of chief of collections.

The West Hartford Library Board touted Irmscher’s leadership experience in Boston.

“As a member of the Boston Public Library leadership team, she headed a variety of internal and external initiatives and special projects, including complex operational and financial analysis, building renovations and new construction for the Central Library in Copley Square and several of the 26 branches,” the board said in a statement.

The library board also thanked Carol Waxman, who had been serving as the interim director of library services, filling the role left open when Martha Church retired from the position in 2020.

The board said they are excited for Irmscher to get started in West Hartford.

“During our search process, Laura stood out with her communication and leadership skills and we are excited to see what can be accomplished when she collaborates with our outstanding library staff and the West Hartford community,” the library board said.
