WEST HARTFORD — On June 15 and 16, the Tax Office mailed real estate and motor vehicle tax bills to West Hartford property owners. Taxes are due July 1, without penalty, according to an email from the town.
In the interest of public health, the Tax and Assessment Offices are closed to in-person transactions. This year, residents have three ways to pay:
Online: Go to www.westhartfordct.gov/tax and click on PAY TAXES NOW. E-check transactions are $0.90; credit/debit card transactions incur a 2.95 percent fee.
By Mail: Return bill with a check payable to Town of West Hartford in the provided self-addressed envelope.
Town Hall Drop Box: You may safely drop your envelope in the drop box located left of the Town Hall main entrance.

In-person transactions are by appointment, only when necessary.
The West Hartford Town Council unanimously adopted a resolution to offer temporary property tax relief to residents and taxpayers on Monday, April 6.
The Town was one of the first communities in the state to adopt both of the new property tax relief programs made available by the State of Connecticut in response to the pandemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (“COVID-19”).
The effect of this program is the equivalent of an extended grace period. The due date of the tax bill is still July 1. Instead of the last day to pay being August 3, the last day to pay will be extended to October 1. All taxpayers approved for the Tax Deferment Program must make payment no later than October 1, or interest will be charged at the statutory rate of 1.5 percent per month retroactive to July 1.
West Hartford is offering this program to “eligible taxpayers,” defined by the State Office of Policy and Management. Visit https://www.westhartfordct.gov/gov/departments/tax_office/covid_19_property_tax_relief.asp to learn eligibility requirements. Applications due no later than July 1, 2020.
There are no application or eligibility requirements (except for landlords) for the Interest Rate Reduction Program. This program provides for a reduced interest rate for a period of 3 months on the following:
1. Delinquent tax bills as of April 1, 2020 and through June 30, 2020 - Interest on delinquent tax bills has been reduced to .25 percent per month for the months of April, May and June for any payment made during this time period.
If payment is made after June 30, interest will be restored to the statutory rate of 1.5 percent per month, retroactive to April 1.
2. Tax Bills due July 1 - The last day to pay without interest will still be August 3. However, for any payment made between August 4 and September 30, interest will be charged at .25 percent per month as opposed to the statutory rate of 1.5 percent per month. Please note that for any payment made after the grace period, interest is charged retroactive to July 1. Therefore, on August 4th interest is charged at .25 percent for July and .25 percent for August, for a total charge of .5 percent in August.
If payment is made after October 1, interest will be restored to the statutory rate of 1.5 percent per month, retroactive to July 1.
